The Federal Government has appointed Zaccheus Adedeji as the Acting Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Adedeji, who hails from Ogbomoso, in Oyo State, and currently serves as Special Adviser (SA) on  Revenue to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will take over the reins of tax administration from Mohammed Nami, whose tenure ends December 2023.

Zaccheus Adedeji at a glance

He obtained his Doctorate Degree in Accounting, specialising in Public Sector Financing from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Earlier, Adedeji who is a

First Class graduate in Accounting also obtained his M.Sc Accounting from the same institution.

He is also a Fellow of the Institutr of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and CITN, alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School of Government

Adedeji is a former Manager at Procter & Gamble Company (P&G), ex-Honourable Commissioner for Finance, in Oyo State, and former Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) in the country.

He is regarded as “a highly qualified and experienced individual”, and his appointment as the Acting FIRS Chairman is noted to be a significant development in tax administration in Nigeria.

On FIRS core mandate

The FIRS is responsible for collecting taxes from businesses and individuals in Nigeria.

However, tax evasion is a major problem in the country, a report said.

Adedeji, however, will need to work closely with the government and the business community to develop new strategies for improving tax compliance. He will also need to address the concerns of several taxpayers about the FIRS’ tax collection methods and effect on the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) in the West African country.
