Consumer Safety: Regulators commiserate, commence inquiry into circumstances of Lagos doctor’s elevator accident, death

Following the sudden death of Dr. Vwaere Diaso in the elevator accident Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the General Hospital, Lagos, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) have instituted an inquiry and review of circumstances leading to her death.

Mr. Babatunde Irukera, Executive Vice-Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (EVC/    CEO) of FCCPC, and Mr. Afolabi Solebo, General Manager/CEO  of LASCOPA, in a joint statement issued Thursday, August 3 and titled, “Re:        Fatal Fall of Dr. Vwaere Diaso in Elevator Accident at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos”, said the information so far received by both the FCCPC and LASCOPA indicated that an elevator malfunctioned at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos resulted in a downward crash leading to the death of the medical doctor in the facility.

The regulators stated Dr. Diaso, who was conducting her housemanship medical training at the medical facility, was a passenger in the elevator.

They noted that she died as result of fatal injuries sustained on account of the unfortunate accident.

Relevant agencies and authorities of Lagos State are currently fully engaged and involved in addressing this sad occurrence and emergent situation.

The statement said: “LASCOPA and FCCPC have been in constant communication with respect to appropriate consumer protection regulatory intervention or action.

“As consumer protection regulators, LASCOPA and FCCPC are deeply saddened by this tragic occurrence, and commiserate with family, friends, colleagues, and associates of Dr. Diaso; as well as the larger community affected.

“LASCOPA and FCCPC are commencing a joint inquiry and review of the circumstances surrounding this incident, particularly, but not limited to the relevant service provider(s) responsible for installation and service/maintenance of the elevator or related equipment.”

The regulators further stated the other relevant Lagos State authorities are fully engaged to ensure the continuing safety of facilities for the benefit of consumers, patrons, and all other users.
