Public Health: Lagos destroys Anthrax-infected animals, intensifies surveillance

*The Lagos State Government discloses the officials have enhanced free vaccination activities and monitoring of the situation to prevent further spread of Anthrax disease in the cosmopolitan state of Nigeria

Emmanuel Akosile | ConsumerConnect The Lagos State Government (LASG) has stepped up its human and animal surveillance activities against Anthrax disease infection.

Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, Sunday, July 30, 2023, stated the State Government officials had seized, burnt and buried six animals infected with Anthrax disease in order to prevent its further spread across the cosmopolitan state in Nigeria.

The government disclosed the identified cases were discovered during surveillance of animals in Lagos Island and Agege areas of the state.

“No case of human infection has either been identified or reported since the discovery of “Anthrax disease in Lagos. Human and animal surveillance activities have been stepped up,” said Mrs. Emokpae.

Free vaccination and monitoring continue

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government said the officials had also intensified free vaccination activities and monitoring of the situation.

The statement further urged animal owners should take advantage of the exercise by coming forward with their herd for inoculation.

She stated: “Please report cases of symptoms in animals to the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture Director of Veterinary Services via telephone on 08023427594, 08180703010 or contact the Veterinary Epidemiologist on 08023328244.”
