Consumer Safety: NAFDAC alerts Nigerians to contaminated soft drink bottles

*The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has directed the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja Plant) to recall the implicated batch of the unwholesome Sprite 50cl glass bottles in circulation, and report to the health regulator’s office for effective monitoring

As part of its regulatory mandate to safeguard the health the people, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has informed the Nigerian public about a contaminated batch of unwholesome Sprite 50cl glass bottles circulating in the West African country.

The Management of the health regulatory agency, in a statement said the affected soft beverage was discovered following a consumer complaint that NAFDAC received and investigated through its the post-marketing surveillance unit.

According to the Management, NAFDAC’s investigation revealed that over five crates of the implicated batch (BN: AZ6 22:32) of Sprite 50cl glass bottles with manufacturing date (MFD: 180423) were discovered to be contaminated with particles.

The health agency stated: “The affected batch of the unwholesome product has been sampled for laboratory analysis in the NAFDAC laboratory, and the Agency has directed all Zonal Directors and State Coordinators to carry out surveillance and mop up the implicated batch of the unwholesome product.”

It also assured consumers of investigating the root cause of the contamination by carrying out a comprehensive current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) Inspection of the product manufacturing site to ensure compliance.

Manufacturer directed to recall affected product, report to office

NAFDAC also directed the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), in the FCT, to recall the implicated batch of the unwholesome product and report to NAFDAC for effective monitoring.

The agency implored consumers in possession of the contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles to submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

NAFDAC equally urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to be cautious, and avoid the sale, distribution, and consumption of the unwholesome product circulating in Nigeria.
