As part of its contribution to the ongoing efforts to combat Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Nigeria, as it is hitting hard and distressing several economies across the world in recent times, authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have embarked on sensitisation and distribution of relief materials to the needy in their host community of Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, Vice-Chancellor of OAU, via tweets on the University’s verified Twitter account Thursday, April 16, stated that the measure is also a veritable avenue to cement “the existing superlative cordiality between the ancient city of Ile-Ife and Obafemi Awolowo University.”

Some of the relief items Obafemi Awolowo University donated to Ile-Ife community.

The Vice-Chancellor made the disclosure while presenting the materials to Comrade Lawrence Awowoyin, President of the Ife Development Board, at His Royal Majesty (HRM) Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife’s Palace, in Ile-Ife, Thursday.

Ogunbodede, on the occasion, extolled Oba Ogunwusi for “the fatherly role he has always played to the University.”

According to him, the Ooni of Ife has done enough to the University community, even during this COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vice-Chancellor added that Obafemi Awolowo University thought it fit to fully support the efforts of the government and the Ooni’risa, HRM Ogunwusi, at curtailing the fatal pandemic in the country.

Prof. Ogunbodede stated that earlier, the University had distributed sensitisation handbills to the people on how to limit the spread of Coronavirus.

He said: “We are aware of the fact that the lockdown has denied members of the community the opportunity to go about their normal businesses.”
