Toyota recalls 16,679 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid vehicles over HEV ECU software defect

Emmanuel Akosile | ConsumerConnect

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling 16,679 model year 2021 RAV4 Prime Plug-In Hybrids.

The automobile manufacturer said in some cold weather conditions, while being driven in Electric Vehicle (EV) Mode, the hybrid vehicle control engine control unit (HEV ECU) software, may cause the hybrid system to shut down if the accelerator is pressed rapidly, resulting in a stall.

The company also disclosed that an engine stall increases the risk of a crash.

In regard to what to do in correcting the defect, Toyota said the dealers would update the HEV ECU software free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 27, 2023.

Affected vehicle owners may contact Toyota’s Customer Service on (800) 331-4331.

Toyota’s number for this recall is 23TA01.
