The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has tasked the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, in the FCT, on effective domestication of Nigeria’s Patients Bill of Rights (PBoR).

Mr. Babatunde Irukera, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of FCCPC, noted this when he visited the hospital in Gwagwalada Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

Irukera also applauded the Management of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for their efforts at ensuring the implementation of the rights in the facility, agency report said.

The EVC/CEO further charged the Management of the hospital to ensure that patients are treated with fairness, especially during their traumatic times.

Irukera said the Commission would hold the hospital responsible and accountable for every complaint raised by patients in the hospital.

He as well urged the hospital Management to ensure that the implementation of the PBoR trickles down to all personnel in the facility.

Irukera further explained: “What we have come here to do is to congratulate you because you said that the hospital had already domesticated the 12 PBoR.

“We demand more from you and for every complaint from patients, we will come after you.”

He stated: “Your work tolerates very minimal margin of error.

“It is important that this domestication goes round to both the security men and cleaners in the hospital.”

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Bissallah Ekele, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, said the health facility had already domesticated the 12 PBoR in the institution through their dealings with patients.

Ekele, represented by Dr. Bob Ukonu, Chairman of Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, said the hospital had transformed over the years to ensure effective service delivery to patients.

Prof. Ekele disclosed the the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, had moved from a 350-bedded hospital to 550-bedded hospital.

He said: “We have made sure that things are put in place in the hospital and patients are attended to well.”

It is recalled Vice-President (Prof.) Yemi Osinbajo, in 2018, launched the FCCPC’s PBoR to address obvious healthcare impediments in the country.
