2022 Poverty Index:  Government explains how 130m Nigerians are poor

*The National Bureau of Statistics states measure used to calculate the poverty index figure is based on Multidimensional Poverty Index with five components of health, living standard, education, security, and unemployment among Nigerians

The Federal Government, through the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has disclosed 130 million Nigerians are poor.

The NBS, its 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index Survey released Thursday, November 17, 2022, in Abuja, FCT, said the figure represented 63 percent of the Nigerian population.

The survey was conducted by NBS, National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).

According to Bureau, the poverty index is mostly experienced in rural areas, especially in the Northern part of the country, with women and children being the most affected.

It was learnt the measure used to calculate the figure was based on Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) with five components of health, living standard, education, security, and unemployment.

Report of the survey also indicated that over 50 percent of children across the country are affected by poverty.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Adeyemi Adeniran, Statistician-General of the Federation, said that 56,610 households were surveyed, and areas such as health, education, living standards, food security, water reliability, underemployment, security shocks, and school attendance were considered during the survey.

While the multidimensional poverty index stood at 27 percent in Ondo State, the figure is estimated at 90 percent in Sokoto State, according to the report.
