5G Networks: MTN activates pilot phase, lauds Minister, NCC for ‘unwavering support’

*MTN Nigeria Communications Plc reassures telecoms consumers the new technology will enable much faster speeds and lower latency with near-instant access to digital resources and downloads within seconds, instead of minutes

As part of the much anticipated launch of the Fifth Generation (5G) technology to facilitate the ubiquitous Broadband telecommunications services in the West African country, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has commenced an open 5G pilot services towards a commercial launch.

ConsumerConnect reports the leading telecoms firm, in a statement issued Wednesday, August 24, 2022, disclosed is plans to launch 5G services in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri and Maiduguri to test the next-generation network infrastructure.

MTN Nigeria stated that telecoms consumers with certain enabled devices would be allowed to connect with, and try out the new-fangled service offering where coverage is available in the specified cities.

According to the company,  to access the 5G networks and enjoy the associated benefits, consumers will need compatible devices, such as routers and mobile phones, which can be pre-ordered from designated MTN walk-in stores and online via the MTN Nigeria Web site and e-marketplace.

The pre-ordered devices can be picked up or will be delivered to customers post the launch event scheduled to take place in a few weeks’ time.

The telecoms firm also noted that the advanced technology promises to extend the reach and capacity of MTN Nigeria’s data network in in the country.

The technology as well will enable much faster speeds and lower latency, giving customers near-instant access to the things they care about and downloads that take seconds, instead of minutes, said MTN.

Adia Sowho, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Nigeria, stated: “Every major technological evolution redefines what is possible – changing the way we live and the way we connect.

“MTN Nigeria has been at the forefront of every leap in telecommunications – from GSM to 2G, 3G, and 4G; 5G has the potential to change everything.

“It will allow us to connect, create, collaborate, and compete in ways we’ve not even begun to imagine.”

Sowho also said: “We appreciate the unwavering support and leadership of Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, Honourable Minister for Communications and Digital Economy, and Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta-led Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in implementing the National Policy on 5G Networks for facilitation of the Nigeria Digital Economy, which has driven the implementation of 5G in the country.

“We’re honoured to be a part of this revolution and being the first to bring 5G to Nigeria, we are truly excited about all the possibilities for the nation.”

The firm further urged consumers to access more informtaion about the 5G networks experience by visiting www.mtn.ng/5g-router to pre-order its 5G Router.

Benefits of 5G technology

It is noted that the 3.5GHz spectrum the telecoms sector regulator issued to MTN Nigeria, as one of the two successful winners of the 5G licence bids December 2021, holds a promising future for technology in Nigeria.

The development is projected to contribute $2.2 trillion to the global economy by 2034, according to a 2020 GSMA Intelligence report.

Besides, ‘The Mobile Economy’ stated the implementation of 5G would accelerate the actualisation of the national targets in the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP), National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS), and other sectoral policies designed to enhance Nigeria’s digital transformation.

By leveraging the largest spectrum dedicated to 5G on the African continent, Nigeria is set to join few other African countries that have rolled out the 5G networks.
