Mitsubishi recalls 76,508 Outlander Sport vehicles over transmission malfunction

Due to transmission that may malfunction, causing an engine stall, Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) is recalling 76,508 model year 2019-2022 Outlander Sport vehicles.

The automobile manufacturer said the affected vehicles may experience continuous variable transmissions and mechanical key ignition systems.

The company noted that a software error in the transmission control unit (CVT-ECU) may incorrectly reduce the transmission gear ratio at high speeds, which can result in an engine stall.

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash, said MMNA.

As regards what to do in correcting the defect, Mitsubishi stated that dealers would update the CVT-ECU software free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 24, 2022.

Meanwhile, affected owners may contact MMNA Customer Service at (888) 648-7820. MMNA’s number for this recall is SR-22-004.
