Sequel to recent upsurge in banditry, kidnappings and acts of terrorism against educational institutions and students in parts of the country, the Federal Government says it is planning to adopt some specific measures to curb the activities of criminals and bandits responsible for these heinous acts.

ConsumerConnect gathered Mr. Andrew David Adejo, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, disclosed this development Monday, July 18, 2022, during the 81st Joint Consultative Committee on Education held in the Banquet Hall of Adamawa State Government House, in Yola, the state capital.

Malam Adamu Adamu, Honourable Minister for Education

The theme of this year’s meeting was “Strengthening Security and Safety in Nigeria Schools for the Achievement of Education 2030 Agenda”.

The forum was aimed at focusing on most effective means to improve learning outcomes to prevent discriminatory attitudes and behaviour, as well as inclusive, equitable safe and healthy schools, report said.

Adejo also explained that some of the measures include the drilling of students and teachers on emergency measures, abolition of boarding schools, creation of special security units for schools, installation of CCTV cameras, and the introduction of security studies into the curriculum of various institutions.

He stated: “It’s become very pertinent in the light of attacks on our education institutions, kidnapping of innocent children, wards, and even parents and guardians, culminating in an unsettling air of insecurity that threatens our educational systems.”

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, who declared the programmme open, said that the state government had long realised how important it is to reposition the entire school system in the state.
