Consumer Safety: SON intercepts N2m worth of substandard, expired products

*The Standards Organisation of Nigeria says seized tyres and food items were either expired or substandard, and not safe for use or human consumption

As part of the regulatory agency’s consumer protection initiatives, Mr. Gambo Dimka, Plateau State Coordinator of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has said the   regulator seized expired and substandard products worth N2million in the state.

It was gathered Dimka, who disclosed this development in an interview Tuesday, May 17, 2022, in Jos, Plateau State capital, said the products seized were mainly food items and fairly used tyres.

The SON State Coordinator stated that the confiscated items were either expired or substandard, and not safe for human consumption or use, agency report said.

Dimka also noted the affected items were seized during SON’s surveillance in stalls from January to April 2022.

According to him, aside from raiding of stalls for expired and substandard products as a means of ridding the society of substandard items from the unsuspecting public, “SON holds various sensitisation programmes to enlighten the public.”

The Plateau State Coordinator urged consumers to look out for expiry dates of products, SON quality marks, such as the “MANCAP logo, to ensure the products had been certified fit by the SON.”

Dimka as well warned those that engaged in the act of selling unwholesome and substandard products to the public to desist from the practice or face the wrath of the law.
