Amid the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Management of the Kaduna State University (KASU) has scheduled to commence full academic activities for the 2020/2021 academic year May 9, 2022.

ConsumerConnect reports Abdullahi Zubairu, Academic Secretary at KASU, in a circular dated and issued Tuesday, April 26, directed all students and lecturers of the institution to resume academic activities.

Sen. (Dr.) Chris Ngige, Honourable Minister for Labour and Employment

The circular further advised all the lecturers and students to abide by the academic calendar.

It is recalled the ASUU strike has extended into two months with the Federal Government yet to accede to the lecturers’ demands.

Subsequently, several concerned Nigerian students have taken to social media platforms to protest against the continued closure of universities in the country.

Sen. (Dr.) Chris Ngige, Honourable Minister for Labour and Employment, recently said the decision to suspend the industrial action embarked upon by ASUU could only be taken by the academic Union.

Ngige, who appeared as a guest on a Channels TV programme, urged the Union to meet with the Benimi Briggs Committee.

Ngige stated in regard to resolving the logjam: “It depends on ASUU. The ball is in their court.

“They should go and meet the Benimi Briggs Committee and look at what the committee is doing and make further inputs so that the work can be accelerated.”

Some of ASUU’s demands include the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.
