The Niger Government has disclosed it invested over N3 billion in the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for the provision of transformers, service lines, and other services for consumers in the communities.

ConsumerConnect reports Alhaji Ahmed Matane, Secretary to the Niger State Government, announced this development at après conference Wednesday, April 20, 2022, in Minna, Niger State capital.

The AEDC on April 15 issued a notice to disconnected all government facilities from power supply over N1.9 billion debt the state government was owning the company.

The electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) went ahead to disconnect all government facilities, including the State House of Assembly Complex, State Secretariat, Office of the Secretary to the Niger Government, Water Board, and all other Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Matane said that the state government was only owing the company only N1 billion of which about 50 per cent of the debt was inherited from the previous administration.

The Secrtary to the State Government (SSG), however, refuted AEDC’s that the state government was owing the company N1.9 billion.

He rather explained that the state government instead invested over N3 billion in the company to purchase of transformers and other light services.

Alhaji Matane said that the state government had been paying N46million to the company monthly.

The state government, he also stated, had engaged a private consultant to verify the validity of the claims made by AEDC.

The present administration is a responsible government that has always created an enabling environment for investors and private organisations to thrive, he said.

The SSG assured the public that efforts are ongoing to also ensure water supply to residents as soon as possible.
