Google launches subsea cable to boost Internet connectivity in Nigeria

Google has revealed that its Equiano subsea cable being launched at different points on the African continent is expected to land for launch in Nigeria as a major landing point April 2022, to create 1.6million jobs and boost Internet speed.

ConsumerConnect reports Mrs. Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, Director of Google West Africa, disclosed this development in a recent meeting with Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, Nigeria’s Honourable Minister for Communications and Digital Economy.

Mrs. Ehimuan-Chiazor stated that Google, an American multinational technology company, is committed to supporting Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) for a Digital Nigeria.

She noted the Big Tech is committed to investing $1 billion in the African continent over the next five years on projects, which also include the Equiano subsea cable.

The Director of Google West Africa also said: “The cable is expected to enable a fivefold increase in average internet speeds in Nigeria and create 1.6 million jobs.”

The cable, she further stated, is being launched as it lands at different points on the continent, much like a road construction that is launched as construction progresses.

Nigeria is a major landing point for the cable and the launch of the milestone is expected to take place in April 2022

Pantami added that the Buhari administration is committed to increasing the ease of doing business in Nigeria and assured that Federal Government will continue to promote regulations that support development.
