Nigeria holds census March 2023 as Buhari approves N10bn for demarcation exercise

*National Population Commission sheds light on the regulatory agency’s preparations for the next census, saying President Muhammadu Buhari has approved N10billion for the next phase of the Enumeration Area Demarcation exercise in 546 Local Government Areas

Nigeria is scheduled to hold a national census between March and April 2023, for the first time in 16 years.

ConsumerConnect reports the decision was part of the resolutions reached at the Council of State meeting held Thursday, April 14, 2022, in Abuja, FCT.

President Muhammadu Buhari chaired the meeting, also attended by former Heads of State, including Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (Rtd.), Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, and Yakubu Gowon.

Others in attendance are Vice-President (Prof.) Yemi Osinbajo; Mr. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF); Babagana Monguno, National Security Adviser (NSA); and Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to the President.

Among others who attended the Council of State meeting Thursday are the State Governors, such as Sen. Hope Uzodinma of Imo State; Dr. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State among others.

Other issues discussed at the meeting include prerogative of mercy – 159 persons out of 162 are to be granted various levels of pardon by the President.

The Council as well briefed on security situations across the country, while President Buhari is to hold a security meeting with security chiefs, based on the Council’s presentations, next Tuesday.

The Council also resolved to confer national honours on 434 Nigerians.

It will be the first honours granted by President Buhari since he assumed office in 2015.

Buhari okays N10bn for 2022 national census

In a related development, Dr. Eyitayo Oyetunju, Acting Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), has disclosed to reporters the regulatory agency’s preparations for the next census.

President Buhari has approved N10billion for the next phase of the Enumeration Area Demarcation exercise in the remaining 546 Local Government Area of the country.

Dr. Oyetunji had stated this at a press conference in Abuja.

The NPC Acting Chairman said: “I am, however, pleased to announce that His Excellency, Mr. President has reaffirmed his commitment to the successful completion of the EAD, and indeed, to the conduct of the next census by approving the release of the total sum of N10 billion for the continuation of the EAD in the remaining 546 local governments in the country.”

According to him, Buhari approved additional N4.5 billion in the 2021 Budget for the completion of the exercise, as part of the preparations for the next census.

According to Oyetunji, the exercise would outline areas in the local government areas into small geographical units called Enumeration Areas where the NPC will collate an accurate list of infrastructural facilities and households.

“The President has graciously followed this up by a further approval of an additional N4.5 billion to be included in the 2021 budget for the completion of the exercise as part of the preparations for the next census.”
