Buhari commissions $2.5bn Dangote Fertiliser Plant in Lagos

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has commissioned the Dangote Fertiliser Plant in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

Buhari Tuesday, March 22, 2022, activated the multi-billion dollar facility at a well-attended event by many political, traditional, and religious leaders, as well as key members of the private sector from various parts of the country.

They include the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; as well as members of the forum including Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Darius Ishaku (Taraba) and Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa).

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group; Mrs. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN); Vice-Chairman of Channels Media Group, Mrs. Olusola Momoh; Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos State Governor, among several other dignitaries on the occasion.

The President was said to have commissioned the facility as part of activities lined up for his working visit to Lagos.

Buhari also inaugurate the newly built terminal at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, as well as inspect the ongoing construction at the Dangote Refinery and the Lekki Deep Sea Port.

ConsumerConnect reports Dangote Fertiliser Plant is Africa’s largest granulated urea fertiliser complex.

The facility occupies 500 hectares of land in the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) and was built at about $2.5billion.

The newly commissioned Fertiliser Plant is expected to help the West African country to retain $125 million regarding import substitution and provide $625million from exports of products from the fertiliser plant.

Nigeria is estimated to need about five to seven million metric tonnes of fertiliser per annum amid its current level of fertiliser consumption which is 1.5 million metric tonnes, and the Dangote Fertiliser Plant was established to produce three million metric tonnes of urea fertiliser per annum in its first phase.
