About 23 Nigerian students still stranded at Kherson State Maritime Academy, in Ukraine, are calling for immediate help from the Federal Government as the young men and women reportedly run out of basic needs.

ConsumerConnect reports the continued Russian invasion of Ukraine has entered into its fourth week at the weekend with no solutions at the ceasefire discussions.

Russian forces seized the port city of Kherson, which has a population of 290,000 people, March 3, 2022, following a three-day siege, agency report said.

Kherson State Maritime Academy, Ukraine

The Nigerian students of the Kherson State Maritime Academy, located at Ushakova Avenue, Kherson Oblast, in Ukraine, urged the Federal Government to appeal to Russian authorities to declare a ceasefire, so they could be safely evacuated from the city.

Kherson was the first major city to fall following Russia’s invasion of the European country, according to report.

The Nigerians said that they had spent about 15 days sleeping in bomb basements as Russia’s offensive intensifies.

One of the students said in a video obtained by Channels TV: “Since this place (Kherson) has been captured, nobody is doing anything to evacuate us from here.

“Please we want to go home. Everybody is cold. In a normal life, we have heaters in our home.

“But in case of war, we are stuck underground where there is no heater.

The affected students also said: “Please, talk to the Mayor of Kherson, talk to the people of Russia.

“Let them come in agreement, so there will be ceasefire for us to get a green corridor.

“Please, I plead with you; we don’t have provisions anymore.”

Another student state that about six Nigerians are not “feeling fine” because of the cold weather.

He also noted: “There is no food to eat.

“We are in a critical condition.”

Recall the Federal Government has evacuated over 1,000 Nigerian returnees to the country since the Russian invasion began February 24 this year.

Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Saturday, March 12, another batch of 300 Nigerians, mostly Sumy-based Nigerian students, had been evacuated to Nigeria from Budapest.
