Court sentences illegal gold miner to 10-year imprisonment for N3.25m fraud in Adamawa

For cheating, criminal breach of trust and fraud, a High Court in Adamawa State, Northern Nigeria, presided over by Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman has convicted and sentenced Muhammed Dahiru Kumo, an illegal gold miner, to 10 years’ imprisonment.

It was learnt that Dahiru’s conviction came March 3, 2022, a year after he was reported by certain Ibrahim Abba for falsely representing to him that he was a dealer in unprocessed gold.

Dahiru had obtained an aggregate sum of N3,250,000 for the sale of the product.

EFCC’s investigation of the plaintiff’s petition revealed that the defendant who mines precious metals neither had any licence or approval from relevant government agency to engage in such activity, according to report.

The accused, however, pleaded guilty to the charge and the judge convicted and sentenced him to 10 years in prison with an option of N200, 000.

The court also ordered the anti-graft Commission to release the sum of N3,250,000 recovered from the suspect to the complainant as restitution.
