Cybercrime: Nigerian gang hacks Indian CEO’s WhatsApp account, demands money from contacts

A Nigerian cybercrime gang has reportedly hacked the WhatsApp account of India’s Odisha Computer Application Centre’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Pattnaik, and demanded money from the people in his contact list.

ConsumerConnect learnt the Odisha Police’s Crime Branch Wednesday, November 17, 2021, in India, said members of a Nigerian gang were apparently involved in hacking the WhatsApp account of the Chief Executive of Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC), in the country.

The Delhi Police’s cyber cell, earlier November 2021, had arrested certain Chimelum Emmanuel Aniwetalu, alias Maurice Degri, a Nigerian, for purportedly hacking WhatsApp accounts, and sending distress messages to people seeking money, The New Indian Express report stated.

Maurice along with others operated the syndicate from Delhi and Bengaluru, report said. Crime Branch ADG Sanjeeb Panda said: “Initial investigation suggests that an associate of Maurice is operating from Bengaluru, and he had hacked the WhatsApp account of OCAC CEO Manoj Kumar Pattnaik.

“The accused has also been booked by Delhi Police.”
