Hyundai recalls 95,000 Tucson, Sonata Hybrid vehicles over engine damage

Hyundai is recalling over 95,000 model year 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrids due to an issue that could increase the risk of a fire or crash.

ConsumerConnect learnt the automaker said the connecting rod bearings inside affected vehicles could become worn prematurely and cause damage.

Accordingly, if the problem becomes bad enough, it could cause the engine to stall or catch on fire, both of which increase the risk of a crash, said Hyundai.

The company is currently working with dealers to replace any damaged bearings and to install a software update that will mitigate the problem, agency report said.

The fix will be free for all vehicle owners, and the automaker plans to send notification letters November 12, 2021.
