NCC Board Chairman facilitates upgrade of wireless Internet access at LAUTECH, Poly Ibadan

In a way to enhance learning and access to educational content in the tertiary institutions of learning in the state, Prof. Adeolu Akande, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has facilitated the upgrade of the Wireless Campus Wide Internet Access at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

ConsumerConnect reports the project is part of the Wireless Internet Cloud (WIC) programme of the Federal Government being implemented by the country’s telecoms regulatory Commission, under the Advance Digital Appreciation Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADAPTI).

High-speed Broadband Internet

The digital learning programme is aimed to providing wireless connectivity within the academic community so as to enhance learning and access to educational content from the Web even after school hours.

The Director of Projects Department at NCC, in a letter dated September 27, 2021, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, and Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, respectively, informed that “the nomination of your institution was based on the recommendation of Professor Adeolu Akande, Chairman, Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission.”

Besides, Akande was also reported to have facilitated a Digital Nigeria Centre (DNC), for the Government College, Ibadan.

ConsumerConnect reports the DNC concept is a Federal Government’s programme designed to improve learning and research by promoting the connection of government schools to Broadband infrastructure across the West African country.

The digital connectivity programme involves the provision of desktops, instructor laptops, refurbishment of ICT laboratories, including electrical, mechanical and civil works, furniture for the ICT labs, providing of learning software, Internet access, solar energy and one-year technical and maintenance support to beneficiary schools in Nigeria.

The programme is managed by the Universal Service Provider Fund (USPF), an arm of the NCC.

The Fund was established principally to enable the achievement of national policy goals for universal access and service to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in rural, unserved and undeserved areas across the country.

Adeolu Akande, PhD, is a Professor of Comparative Politics and Political Communication at Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, where he also serves as the Director of the Centre for Presidential Studies.

Prior to his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Governing Board of the Commission, he was the Chairman, Board of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), a sister agency under the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, Abuja, FCT.

Akande is an eminent academic, consummate professional, resourceful journalist and top-level public servant in the country.
