Buhari, NCC condole with family of late Olabiyi Durojaiye, ex-Board Chairman

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the family of late Otunba (Senator) Olabiyi Durojaiye, erstwhile Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Late Senator Durojaiye died Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at the age of 88 years.

Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, in a statement issued Tuesday, in Abuja, FCT, said President Buhari also sympathised with the Government and people of Ogun State, friends, and political associates of late Durojaiye

The statement noted the President described the former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as “a dogged fighter for democracy, an activist, a nationalist and an indispensable member of the financial community.”

Buhari stated that Durojaiye’s imprints were always visible where he worked as a Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Mint, and as Chairman of the Board of NCC.

Born in 1933 in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, late Durojaiye, represented Ogun East Constituency in the Nigerian Senate from 1999 to 2003, and he was a member of the Constituent Assembly from 1988 to 1989.

The President further said the late Senator had remained an epitome of professionalism, integrity, kindness and humility, said the President.

He urged the family to take solace in the fact that their patriarch lived a life of inspiration and impacted positively the community and national landscapes.

In a similar vein, the Board, Management and Staff of the Nigerian Communications Commission have sympathised with the family of the telecoms regulatory Commission’s immediate past Board Chairman.

Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Executive Vice-Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of NCC, in a condolence letter to the family was quoted to have described late Durojaiye as a patriarch, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Danbatta extolled his lifetime of service as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, banker, lawyer, economist, and evergreen administrator par excellence.

The NCC EVC stated: “He was a renowned fighter for freedom, a consummate statesman, honest, courageous and hardworking man during his lifetime.”

He noted the late statesman served as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Commission from November 2016 to January 2019.

According to Danbatta, the Commission will forever remember him for the diligent conduct of the businesses of the Board, and for his notable achievements during the brief period he served as the Chairman.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the entire family at this grieving period as we pray for his soul to continue to rest in perfect peace.

May the Almighty God in His infinite mercy grant the entire family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” said the NCC EVC/CEO.
