The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says its attention has been drawn to a recent statement on an online publication, credited to Mr. Segun Ogunsanya, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Airtel Nigeria, claiming that the telecoms regulator in the country has renewed the mobile operating licence of his firm for another period of 10 years.

Mr. Ogunsanya reportedly made the statement while speaking Wednesday, July 14, 2021, in Lagos, during the media launch of Airtel’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, ‘Touching Lives 6’.

However, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, Director of Public Affairs at NCC, in a statement issued Sunday, July 18, 2021, in Abuja, FCT, said that the Commission though acknowledges that Airtel Nigeria has applied for the renewal of the Unified Access Service (UASL) Licence to the Commission, the application is yet to be approved.

The document is still undergoing required regulatory process, said Dr. Adinde.

The NCC noted this clarification is issued “for the guidance of our stakeholders,” added the statement.
