Though several citizens believe its launch is long overdue after some failed attempts at it in the last few years, the Federal Government has announced that the new national carrier is expected to commence operations by the first quarter (Q1) of 2022.

Hadi Sirika, Honourable Minister for Aviation, stated this development while addressing the State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting Wednesday, May 18, in Abuja, FCT.

Sirika acknowledged that the new national carrier is long overdue and the private sector-run airline will start operations by early 2022, with possibly cheaper rates.

The Minister noted that the new national carrier should be a viable airline, and is potentially poised to cater to millions of travellers in Nigeria and other parts of the Africa.

The forced postponement of the planned date for the establishment of the National Carrier (which was initially planned for the end of 2021) was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, stated Sirika.

The Minister added that the Ministry of Aviation would return to the FEC in two weeks to submit a memo with an outline business case for Council’s approval.
