Federal Government declares Wednesday, Thursday public holidays for Eid-ul-Adha celebrations in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Muslim celebration of Eid-ul-Adha.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Honourable Minister for Interior, announced this in a statement Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, released Monday, May 25, 2026, in Abuja, FCT.

The statement noted that the Federal Government’s declaration of holidays to mark the event reflects its respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims joining the global Islamic community in observing the sacred occasion.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo, therefore, conveyed the warm felicitations of the Federal Government to all Muslim faithful in Nigeria and in the Diaspora.

He also described Eid-ul-Adha as a festival of deep spiritual significance rooted in the values of sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for one’s fellow man.

The government further urged all Nigerians to use the period for prayers and sober reflection, seeking divine guidance upon the West African country, especially as it pursues sustainable peace, security and prosperity for every citizen.

The statement added: “It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration.”
