In line with President Bola Tinubu administration’s commitment to protecting Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and ensuring the safety of Nigerians, the Federal Government has officially handed over the construction of a brand-new Carter Bridge in Lagos to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The handing over event held Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Carter Bridge, on Lagos Island, Lagos State.

ConsumerConnect learnt the reconstruction project, valued at ₦545 billion, would be financed through a combination of Federal Government counterpart funding and external borrowing, with 30 percent to be paid by the Federal Government and 70 percent sourced externally.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Lagos, H. E. Engr. (Senator) David Umahi, Honourable Minister for Works, said the decision to reconstruct the bridge had become necessary after years of alarming structural investigations revealed worsening defects beneath both the Carter Bridge and the 3rd Mainland Bridge.
