Following a recent viral but misleading infographic being circulated in the digital space, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has said the Federal Government did not introduce any new tax on vehicles.

The NRS said this in reaction to the viral infographic, claiming that the Federal Government introduced a new tax on vehicles, expected to take effect from July 1, 2026.

Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser to the NRS Executive Chairman and Spokesperson for the Service, in a statement Sunday, April 26, 2026, said the message circulating online did not originate from the agency, or any government institution.

Adekanmbi said the viral material directed owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to pay an unspecified levy “online or at approved banks and agencies”, while also referencing an “incorrect government Web site”.

The Special Adviser to the NRS Executive Chairman also said the tax administration regulatory agency’s attention was drawn to the message, which, he noted, was designed to appear authentic by using official government insignia.

The statement further noted: “The attention of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has been drawn to a viral infographic message claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a fresh vehicle tax on all registered vehicles effective from 1 July 2026.

“The message, which was adorned with the federal government logo to give the appearance of authenticity, advises vehicle owners to make payments online or at approved banks and agencies.

“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the Service or any government agency.”

Adekanmbi urged Nigerians to ignore the message, and rely only on verified government channels for information on tax policies and payment obligations.

“Citizens are, therefore, advised to disregard the fabricated message designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” the statement added.

NRS as well advised Nigerians to follow its official communication platforms for accurate updates on tax administration and government directives.
