ConsumerConnect reports the telecoms sector regulatory Commission stated this Thursday, October 15, 2026, in Lagos, at the inaugural NCC Internet Governance Symposium.

The NCC, at the event, stressed the need to translate discussions on Internet governance into practical actions that benefit Nigerian digital consumers.

Delivering the opening address on behalf of Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of NCC, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services (ECTS) of the Commission, said decisions about the Internet extended beyond technology and connectivity.

Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, Director of Public Affairs at NCC, in a statement, also quoted Engr. Oshadami said: “They affect opportunity, trust, security and the rights of the people who use it.”

Internet governance and AI responsibility

He emphasised the importance of Nigeria’s active participation in Internet governance discussions.

The NCC Executive Commissioner, Technical Services further acknowledged that the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence was changing how people learn, work, communicate, and access services.

According to him, the new technology, however, is also creating fresh concerns around harmful content, fraud, privacy, accountability and child protection in the digital space.

Oshadami explained that tackling these challenges would require cooperation across the communications sector of the Nigerian economy and beyond.

He opined that no single institution could address identified challenges effectively in isolation.

On significance of Internet Code of Practice 2026

Highlighting the strategic importance of the regulatory instrument, Oshadami stated the NCC’s Internet Code of Practice (ICOP) 2026 is a framework for promoting a safer and more responsible online environment in Nigeria.

He further explained that  effectiveness of the framework would depend on clear expectations, meaningful stakeholder engagement, and consistent implementation.

The Executive Commissioner, Technical Services of the Commission as well discussed the Cyber Resilience Framework for the Nigeria Communication Sector (CRF-NCS).

He explained the framework seeks to strengthen the security and resilience of the infrastructure supporting digital services in the West African country.

Both initiatives, he stated, reflected a fundamental responsibility to ensure that Nigerians could use the Internet with greater confidence.

The launch of Internet Governance Working Group

A key highlight of the symposium was the formal launch of the Internet Governance Working Group.

The Commission disclosed the Group was established to provide a continuing platform for stakeholder engagement beyond the event in Lagos.

The NCC noted the platform is expected to strengthen dialogue, identify practical priorities and encourage coordinated action on issues affecting Nigeria’s digital environment.

Oshadami, therefore, urged participants in the inaugural NCC Internet Governance Symposium to make their contributions candidly and constructively.

He equally encouraged them to leave the symposium with a clearer understanding of their respective responsibilities, and a shared commitment to action.

The Executive Commissioner expressed the NCC’s appreciation to participants, declaring the inaugural NCC Internet Governance Symposium 2026 open.

Engr. Oshadami urged stakeholders to sustain cooperation towards attaining a safer, more secure, and responsible digital future for Nigeria.
