British High Commission  celebrates Lloyd’s Register’s support for future Nigerian leaders

The British High Commission (BHC), in Nigeria, has commended Lloyd’s Register for its continued commitment to developing the next generation of Nigerian leaders through its partnership with the UK Government’s prestigious Chevening Scholarship Programme.

Through this partnership, outstanding Nigerian professionals pursuing maritime-related studies have the opportunity to undertake fully funded Master’s degrees at leading UK universities.

As one of Chevening’s valued global partners, Lloyd’s Register, a leading provider of engineering, technology and professional services for the maritime sector, sponsors Chevening Scholarships for candidates from Nigeria and other African countries whose studies align with the maritime industry.

Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at FCDO/BHC Abuja, in a statement Wednesday, October 7, 2026, noted Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner, in Lagos, spoke on the importance of the partnership.

Baxter stated: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Lloyd’s Register to support outstanding Nigerians with the potential to lead and drive positive change in the maritime sector. “Together, we are investing in future leaders who will strengthen innovation, sustainability, and growth across the industry.”

The British envoy said: “Nigeria’s maritime sector is vital to trade and economic development, and this partnership helps equip emerging leaders with the skills and networks needed to shape its future.

“We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and celebrating the achievements of Chevening Scholars as they make a lasting impact in Nigeria and beyond.”

The statement also quoted Goz Gwam, Business Director – Africa, Lloyd’s Register, said: “We are proud of our partnership with Chevening, which helps us connect with talented individuals whose aspirations support key areas of national development.

“Together, we are committed to developing the next generation of maritime leaders who will drive Nigeria’s and Africa’s growth as well as further strengthen UK–Nigeria relations.”

Chevening is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, Lloyds Register being one of them.

The scholarships support one-year taught master’s degrees at UK universities for individuals with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision-makers, and opinion formers.

It began in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international awards scheme. Chevening Scholars come from over 140 countries and territories worldwide.

Lloyd’s Register is a global professional services organisation specialising in marine classification, compliance, and engineering advisory services for the maritime and energy industries.

With a heritage dating back to 1760, Lloyd’s Register is recognised globally for its work in maritime safety, engineering excellence, and sustainability.
