MultiChoice: Ghana halts licence revocation as firm pledges to obey laws, respect consumer rights  

*Ghana’s National Communications Authority affirms MultiChoice Ghana has responded to official notice of intention to suspend the Pay-TV company’s authorisation and request for its pricing model, noting the Pay-TV firm has pledged to ‘respect due process and the laws of Ghana and its people’

The Ghanaian Government through the National Communications Authority (NCA), has affirmed the receipt of MultiChoice Ghana’s response to its official notice of intention to suspend the Pay-TV company’s authorisation and request for its pricing model in the country’s ecosystem.

The Ghanaian NCA, in a statement Sunday, September 7, 2025, titled, “Update on DSTV Pricing in Ghana”, said while the Authority reviews the company’s submission, there have been further engagements with MultiChoice Ghana regarding its public statement dated, 5th September.

ConsumerConnect had reported Hon. Samuel Narhey George, Ghanaian Minister for Communications Technology and Innovations, following the company’s feedback on the government’s earlier communication, said the West African country would not tolerate MultiChoice’s “disrespect” to Ghanaian consumers.

George, last week, in a post on X, restated that the Ghanaian Government would enforce its earlier decision to revoke the company operating licence by Sunday, September 7.

The Minister had asserted: “Let me be clear, I have no intention to continue tolerating the disrespect to Ghanaians by DSTv.

“If MultiChoice is not interested, as they claim in their last statement, in discussing a reduction in prices as they had indicated to me, we would proceed to effect the shutdown tomorrow, as indicated.”

The Ghanaian Government further alleged that “DSTv indicated their willingness to engage the Ministry on its concerns on pricing, and prayed us to stay our enforcement action.

“If they have changed their position, then we simply would enforce the regulatory action.”

‘Ghana open for businesses that respect laws, institutions’

Accusing MultiChoice Ghana of failure to operate as a responsible corporate citizen in the country, Minister George also wrote: “No company is above the law. When MultiChoice is ready to discuss price reduction, they can come to the negotiation table. Until then, there is nothing for us to meet over.

“The @NCAGhana would carry out enforcement. Ghana is open for businesses that respect our laws and institutions.”

The Authority, Sunday however noted the following clarifications have been obtained from MultiChoice as regards its readiness to resolve the burning issue with the Ghanaian Government, going forward:

It disclosed that MultiChoice Ghana “agrees to the directive from the Honourable Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations for the establishment of a Stakeholder Committee to evaluate DSTV pricing in Ghana, and that they intend to fully participate in this work.

NCA: MultiChoice ready to follow due process, laws and respect consumers’ rights

The NCA also stated: “The outcome of the Stakeholder Committee would be determined at the end of its work.

“MultiChoice has confirmed that it will respect due process and the laws of Ghana and its people.”

The Authority added: “The first meeting of the Stakeholder Committee shall be held on Monday, 8th September, 2025.

“The Authority shall provide further updates on this matter in due course.”
