Following a recent inspection that uncovered substandard production practices in the facility, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has disclosed its enforcement team shut the premises of Shine Shine Skincare in the Agege area of the cosmopolitan state.

NAFDAC operatives sealed off the illegal cosmetic production facility for manufacturing skin-lightening products marketed as “organic”.

However, the health sector regulator agency noted that such products are adjudged unsafe for human consumption.

NAFDAC also reported that its enforcement operatives found a range of unregistered products being produced at the site

It noted these include Peeling White Scrub, Glass Scrub Wash, Antiaging Radiant Glow, 10X Customized Native Soap, 5D Instant Whitening Soap, Yellow Tone Whitening Body Cream, Exfoliation Soap and Customized Body Cream.

The health sector regulator said Shine Shine Skincare facility manufactured the itemised consumer products without approval, and in violation of good manufacturing practice requirements in Nigeria.

The agency further revealed that investigators discovered the affected products were deceptively labelled, and often contained ingredients associated with unsafe levels of banned substances.

These include corticosteroid-based bleaching agents, which are prohibited in cosmetic formulations due to documented health risks. Prolonged use of such substances can result in skin thinning, delayed wound healing and increased susceptibility to infection or injury.

NAFDAC, therefore, warned manufacturers, marketers, and other stakeholders in the value chain against the proliferation of unregistered cosmetic products in the market.

These pose a significant public health risk to Nigerians, stated the agency.

He health regulator also urged consumers to verify the regulatory status of cosmetic and personal care items before purchase, and to report suspicious products to its offices nationwide.

Further investigations into the facility, the agency said, are underway.

It threatened regulatory sanctions and legal actions would be taken against those responsible, in accordance with Nigerian law governing the manufacture and sale of regulated consumer products.
