FutureMap: NITDA highlights role of technology in attaining economic prosperity

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has emphasised the need for state policymakers to identify and harness their resources effectively.

ConsumerConnect reports Malam Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE, Director-General of NITDA, stated this in his keynote address while speaking at a capacity building Workshop held at FutureMap Academy, in Hadejia, Jigawa State.

The theme of the workshop is: “AI for Office Productivity, Design Thinking, Agriculture, Health, Education, Energy, and Climate Change”.

Future Map Foundation in collaborating with NITDA, the Jigawa State Government, Huawei, Cosmopolitan University, and Open School Initiative organised the forum.

The Information Technology (IT) sector regulatory agency also noted the event attracted several participants, including academics, professionals, startup founders, students, government officials, and representatives from non-governmental organisations across Nigeria.

Affirming Jigawa’s large pool of Computer Science graduates as a significant asset, the Director-General of NITDA explained how they could be empowered to contribute to the  development of the state, if equipped with right skills and opportunities.

Significance of tech adoption for increased opportunities, national development, by Inuwa

Going down the memory lane, Inuwa also shared personal anecdotes about his journey into Computer Science and digital transformation.

He explained how local mentors could inspire the next generation to explore careers in technology for national development.

According to him, there is a need for policies that build remote work competencies among young people.

Inuwa equally shared the success stories of some young Nigerians, who transitioned from being workers in organisations to a high-paying remote role with foreign companies.

He, therefore, emphasised the importance of integrating technology into various sectors of the Nigerian economy, including agriculture, to create diverse employment opportunities.

In recording improved service delivery, the Director-General of the agency as well encouraged participants to rethink enhanced service delivery.

Inuwa further stated the need for technology-driven solutions to improve citizens’ lives by utilising resources efficiently to improve productivity and enable remote work opportunities for citizens.

In regard to the impact of digital transformation on productivity, integrating people, processes, and technology, Inuwa also cited Uber and Airbnb as examples of disruption through innovation.

On AI practical applications

The NITDA Chief showcased some practical applications if Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He suggested government services, such as land and birth certificate registration could benefit from digital transformation, thereby reducing bureaucratic stress for citizens.

As regards the transformative role of technology and self-learning in boosting productivity, Inuwa disclosed how Artificial Intelligence is being used at NITDA to enhance operational efficiency by streamlining processes and managing complex tasks.

Emphasising the significance of adopting a strategic mindset, and integrating technology into everyday workflows, the Chief Executive urged participants to start with small changes in their own offices and inspire others to employ strategic approaches to problem-solving in their organisations.

According to Inuwa, effective service delivery starts with individual commitment and grows into a collective action.

Huawei committed to Nigeria’s digital transformation

Inna goodwill message at the event, Huawei stated its commitment to digital transformation agenda, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

Dr. Nihinlola Mary Fafore, Huawei Representative, in a virtual delivery noted the company’s vision to empower individuals and communities with digital skills in the country.

Dr. Fafore stated that in partnership with stakeholders, Huawei aims to bridge the digital divide, foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and enhance employability among young Nigerians.

She also explained the initiative is part of Huawei’s efforts at developing a robust technology ecosystem in the country.

This is with a view to ensuring that no region is left behind in the journey towards technological advancement, Fafore said.

Dr. Rislan Abdulazeez Kanya, Technical Adviser to the Governor of Jigawa State on ICT and Digital Economy, highlighted the untapped potential of local human capital and the importance of strategic policies in fostering growth and innovation.

Kanya stressed the commitment of the state government, NITDA, and other stakeholders to fostering innovation and empowering local communities through technology while positioning Jigawa as a potential hub for tech-driven development in Nigeria.

Other participants in the programme equally emphasised the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement in the rapidly evolving digital landscape in the country’s economy.

The participants also advocated a collaborative effort at creating a technologically advanced and efficient work environment in Jigawa State.
