Tinubu congratulates new NUJ President Yahaya, Executive Team

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Alhassan Yahaya on his election as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Yahaya was elected as the President of NUJ November 27, 2024, at the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State capital.

Tinubu also congratulated other newly-elected members of the NUJ Executive.

The Nigerian leader as well lauded the Union for organising a rancour-free election at the conference.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Saturday, November 30, 2024, stated President Tinubu affirmed “Yahaya’s overwhelming victory was a testament to the NUJ members’ confidence in his leadership qualities.”

The statement also noted Tinubu expressed optimism that Yahaya’s experience, particularly as the former Deputy President of the Union, would be instrumental as he leads the Fourth Estate of the Realm in Nigeria.

Onanuga stated: “The President emphasises the importance of the press taking on its constitutional roles with a renewed patriotic passion, aligned with the vision and efforts of the founding fathers of journalism in Nigeria.”

Furthermore, the President encourages Yahaya and the new leadership to address malpractices within the industry, noted the Presidential aide.

The President reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring a free and independent media integral to deepening democracy and promoting national development.

The statement further noted President Tinubu expected Yahaya’s tenure to reflect a strengthened commitment to upholding journalism ethics while fostering a collaborative relationship with the government to build a just and equitable society.

Tinubu wished Yahaya and his team a successful and impactful term in office, Onanuga stated.
