In line with its series of activities for its nationwide ember month sensitisation campaigns, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Friday, November 8, 2024, urged travellers to report reckless driving on roads, to reduce accidents during the 2024 ember months in Nigeria.

ConsumerConnect learnt the FRSC noted this as part of the ongoing sensitisation campaign tagged, “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers”.

The Plateau State Command of the FRSC had activated its campaign November 6 this year in Jos, the state capital.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Maxwell Plateau, Sector Commander of the FRSC in Plateau State, stressed the need for behavioural change among drivers in the North-East State.

Plateau also averred that the passengers have the right to a safe drive, as he encouraged them to caution drivers who violate road rules, according to report.

The FRSC chief stated: “We must appreciate the selfless services the transport subsector in the country ensures that the movement of people, goods, and services get to their destinations safely.

“However, we must be deliberate in playing our role to maximise safety.

“As such, FRSC will, at this critical moment, intensify, increase visibility, provide prompt response to rescue, and add more gravity to the enforcement of traffic rules and regulations to ensure our safety.”

He also noted: “However, passengers also have their own roles to play.

“By reporting reckless driving and adhering to road safety guidelines, travellers can contribute to a safer ember month period. Remember, safe arrival is everyone’s responsibility.”

Also speaking at the forum, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, who was the Special Guest of Honour, commended the FRSC for the good work it is doing to ensure sanity on Nigerian roads, and reduce road traffic crashes and clearance of obstructions.

Represented at the forum by Noel Nkup, Honourable Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Governor Mutfwang said he was aware of the challenges faced by commuters, considering the state of the roads in the state.

He, therefore, assured that very soon, there would be “positive changes on the roads for people to have safer roads.”

Yakubu Dalyop, State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), was also said have indicated that the union would do everything possible to support road safety efforts in the state.

Dalyop said the NUTRW had mapped strategies in that regard, including setting up a task force to ensure that any vehicle loading at their parks is fully inspected and also ensure that the tyres are good enough for the journey.

The Chairman of NURTW in Plateau State stated: “No vehicle will be allowed to carry overload. All passengers must complete the passenger manifest.”
