The Federal Government of Nigeria enhances measures against the use of unapproved devices, and combat issues of phone theft, and other fraudulent activities involving mobile gadgets in the Nigerian telecoms ecosystem.

ConsumerConnect reports the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced the Device Management System (NCC-DMS), which is regarded as a robust solution aimed at enhancing security and protecting consumers in the mobile device market in the country.

According to NCC, the new initiative christened ‘Type Approval Business Rule 2024’, now mandates all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Nigeria to hook up to the NCC-DMS, which registers and monitors devices.

The telecoms sector regulatory Commission also explained the fundamental objectives of the system are to improve security, enforce regulatory compliance, and increase control over mobile devices across the West African country.

The industry regulator noted the NCC-DMS, acting as a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), would serve as a unified database that enables the tracking and monitoring of mobile devices on all networks in the telecoms ecosystem.

The NCC’s solution is also designed to significantly reduce mobile-related crimes and enhance consumer protection, making Nigeria’s telecoms space more secure for all the stakeholders.

Besides, the new-fangled Device Management System is expected to ensure stricter control by ensuring that only authorised devices are used across the mobile and communication networks in order to promote safer and more regulated mobile usage in Nigeria.
