Alleged Discrimination: FCCPC seals off Chinese supermarket as company owner flees

*Nigerian consumers recently expressed outrage over a discriminatory policy being implemented by the Chinese Supermarket, in Abuja, by restricting entry exclusively to its citizens

Enforcement Unit officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer and Protection Commission (FCCPC) have sealed off Abuja-based Chinese supermarket situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

ConsumerConnect reports the FCCPC operatives shut the supermarket when they stormed the company’s premises Monday, April 22, 2024.

The market regulatory Commission’s officials later shut the supermarket after interrogating Nigerian workers.

It is recalled that Nigerians, earlier Sunday, April 21, had expressed outrage over a discriminatory policy implemented by the Chinese Supermarket which restricted entry exclusively to its citizens and barred Nigerians.

The facility manager of the complex Shaibu Sanusi confirmed that Nigerians from outside the complex do not shop but Nigerians within can access it.

While the supermarket remains shut, the consumer protection agency seems to believe that some people are hiding inside in a bid to avoid confrontation with the agency.

Why supermarket owner flees, by staff

In a related development, the facilities workers at an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce, earlier had disclosed the owner of the supermarket fled the premises.

The workers, who are said to be mostly Nigerians, disclosed this development Monday, April 22, when the FCCPC Enforcement Unit team stormed the supermarket.

A Chinese lady, Cindy Liu Bei, who is said to be the owner of the supermarket, had fled Monday morning at 8:26a.m. with her family as confirmed on the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera, according to the company’s workers.

The FCCPC officials subsequently shut the supermarket.
