Digital Economy: NCC donates Virtual Examination Centre to Poly

*The Nigerian Communications Commission donates a Virtual Examination Centre to Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, stressing the positive impacts Information and Communications Technology on digital learning and research for both students and lecturers of the academic institution

In consonance with the Federal Government’s use and adoption of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) across the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Friday, August 11, 2023, donated a Virtual Examination Centre to Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

The telecoms sector regulatory Commission hands over the facility to the Management of the institution on the campus  in Abeokuta, agency report said.

The new facility comprises an ICT centre furnished with 250 tables, chairs and desktop computers with ICT peripherals, and a 200KVA Generator, report noted.

In his address at the event, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Commission, disclosed that the donation is in accordance with the Federal Government’s futuristic policies in the Nigeria Digital Economy.

Advancing the Nigeria Digital Economy

Danbatta, represented by Mr. Philip Eretan, Director of Projects at NCC, stressed the Nigerian Government has prioritised the use and adoption of ICT across the country’s six geo-political zones in the country.

The EVC/CEO of NCC highlighted the positive impacts that ICT could bring to bear on digital learning and research for both students and lecturers of the institution.

“The Federal Government has developed two policy documents geared towards using ICT for the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

“The commission, as part of her mandate to implement the above policy documents, has developed various intervention projects which are geared towards promoting ICT literacy and digital skills,” said NCC.

The Commission also said: The projects will also increase ICT penetration, ensure that staff and students leverage digital technology for research, learning, inspiration for innovation, capacity building and advancement among others.

“The Virtual Examination Centre is not merely a physical space; it represents a nexus of knowledge, technology and the aspirations of the students.”

Danbatta further stated: “It is a space where traditional assessment methods converge with modern digital solutions, creating an environment that is conducive to fair, secure and efficient evaluations.”

MAPOLY appreciate ICT facility

Responding to the NCC donation, Dr. Adeoye Odedeji, Rector of MAPOLY appreciated the Federal Government and the Commission for the facility.

Odedeji noted that the donation came a time the school needed it.

According to him, the donation has remained one of the best facilities the institution has ever received in its history.

The Rector said: “It appears as if you are conversant with our needs, and that again portrays the fact that before you do any project, you do thorough needs assessment.

“We definitely need this facility, particularly, at this time, when we are deepening ICT knowledge among our staff and students.”

MAPOLY stands out among other polytechnics in Nigeria in terms of research and academics, said he.

Odedeji assured the institution would continue to justify the government’s investment in MAPOLY.
