Insecurity: House of Reps backs Senators to issue Buhari 6-week ultimatum, threaten impeachment

In view of the eerie security situation in the country in recent times, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has joined the Senate to hand President Muhammadu Buhari a six-week ultimatum to fix rising insecurity or face impeachment in the National Assembly (NASS), Abuja, FCT.

Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, disclosed this after a closed-door meeting of the joint Minority Caucus of the Federal legislature Thursday, July 28, 2022.

Elumelu said the signatures would be gathered to impeach the President if the security situation is not addressed.

The lawmaker also drew attention to the general state of the nation, including the Foreign Exchange (Forex) rate and aviation crisis.

It is recalled the Senators, especially from the Minority Caucus, Wednesday, July 27, had staged a walkout on the floor of the Red Chambers over the burning security issues in Nigeria.

Sen. Philip Aduda, Minority Leader of the Senate, had raised a point of order asking Senate President Ahmad Lawan, to discuss the security situation in Nigeria and the impeachment of President Buhari.

However, Sen. Lawan, who presided over the plenary, declined the request of the Minority Leader

The Senate President said Aduda’s point of order raised fell flat on its face.

At a media briefing after the walkout, the Senators issued a six-week ultimatum to the President to tackle insecurity across the country or face impeachment.

Armed Forces assure Buhari fresh strategy to tackle bandits, terrorists

In a related development, members of the Nigerian Armed Forces have assured President Muhammadu Buhari of adopting a new strategy to deal with terrorists and bandits who have continued to wreak havoc on innocent people across the country.

Major-General Babagana Monguno, National Security Adviser (NSA), disclosed this development while briefing State House Correspondents after a Security Council meeting Thursday, July 28, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The NSA said: “Members of the Armed Forces have made a commitment that in the coming weeks, they have already started working on a new strategy to deal with these snippets of violence.

“They have given their word, commitment to the President that there will be a change in momentum, regardless of the fact that there might be a certain institutional limitations which they face.

“They have understood the enormity of responsibilities that they have.”

Monguno hinted that the Council would soon conclude its special investigation regarding the July 5 terror attack on the Kuje Correctional facility, in Abuja, and subsequent release of over 600 terrorists.

According to him, the Council would punish those who, by the neglect of duty, allowed the terrorists to get away after the dastardly attack.

The NSA also advised media professionals against giving wide publicity to the terrorists.

Such reading materials flooding the Internet have dire consequences for the country, stated he.

Monguno further said: “We are in a very difficult situation. The Council understands that Mr. President understands people’s concerns about the growing insecurity.

“I can assure you that there is no straight, cut-and-dry method of dealing with this thing and let all of us embrace each other.

“I know people are weary, tired. People are beginning to gravitate to other places for self-help.

“The truth is that help is rooted in everyone working for the other person.”

Earlier, Buhari had summoned the Service Chiefs to an emergency security meeting few days after a similar attack on the Presidential Brigade of Guards right in the FCT.

The emergency meeting had in attendance the NSA, Major-General Bashir Magashi (rtd), Minister for Defence, and Maigari Dingyadi, Police Affairs Minister.

Others at the security meeting include the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor, the Service Chiefs and Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The meeting reassessed the current security situation around the country as well as looked into ways of overcoming challenges confronting some parts of the country.
