With reference a post-holiday spike in the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in most parts of the global, mostly caused by the Omicron variant, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that the number of new cases is falling.

ConsumerConnect, however, learnt that a top official of the global health body had cautioned consumers that the pandemic is “nowhere near over” after all.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, said: “In some countries, cases seem to have peaked, which gives hope that the worst of this latest wave is done with.

“But no country is out of the woods yet. I remain particularly concerned about countries with low vaccination rates.”

Ghebreyesus noted that though the evidence suggests that the Omicron variant infections are less severe.

The WHO Director-General, nonetheless, stated it is wrong to assume that all cases of the variant of the virus are mild.
