on the cause of the train crash while vowing a thorough investigation \u2026 to ensure that lessons are learnt from the tragedy <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Isola Moses | ConsumerConnect<\/p>\n<p>United Kingdom (UK) accident investigators Saturday, June 20, 2026, commenced investigations into the cause of a train collision north of London, which killed a driver and injured scores of passengers, nine critically.<\/p>\n<p>The crash afternoon Friday, June 19 near Bedford, a town around 90 kilometres (55 miles) north of the British capital, involved two London-bound trains on the same track, according to East Midlands Railway (EMR), which operates both services.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ddoF8RxXPv\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=973\">OAU emerges first institution to win both UniversityDUEL, SMART Challenge same season<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cOAU emerges first institution to win both UniversityDUEL, SMART Challenge same season\u201d \u2014  Consumer Experience Is A Top Priority\" src=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=973&amp;embed=true#?secret=18tQEN7OEk#?secret=ddoF8RxXPv\" data-secret=\"ddoF8RxXPv\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said it was \u201ctoo early to speculate\u201d on the cause of the crash while vowing \u201ca thorough investigation \u2026 to ensure that lessons are learnt,\u201d AFP report said.<\/p>\n<p>British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D\u2019Orsi said in an update Saturday near the scene that more than 80 people had been treated for injuries in hospital and 28 remained there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine are in a critical condition,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Police had earlier confirmed that the driver of one of the trains had died at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Orsi said that \u201cspecialist investigators from British Transport Police are working with colleagues at the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to gather the facts and determine what has happened\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<strong>Suddenly\u2019 Hit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying King Charles was \u201cgreatly saddened\u201d by the crash and sent \u201chis thoughts and sympathies\u201d to the dead man\u2019s family and to those injured.<\/p>\n<p>A passenger on one of the trains, Paul Cavin, told the BBC: \u201cWe had stopped and suddenly we were hit from behind pretty bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were people injured on my carriage,\u201d he said, adding he could see many wounded people walking away from the trains, some with \u201csmashed up noses\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The East of England Ambulance Service said Saturday 11 people sustained \u201cvery serious\u201d injuries, while a further 32 suffered serious wounds and 56 others had minor impacts.<\/p>\n<p>It dispatched more than 20 ambulances and specialist hazardous area rescue teams, along with six air ambulances.<\/p>\n<p>The area\u2019s fire and rescue service said it mobilised over 20 fire and specialist vehicles, and at the height of the response, more than 70 firefighters and officers were involved at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Another passenger, Brett Byatt, told BBC radio it felt \u201csurreal\u201d the morning after and that he had \u201cmoved into the stage of anger now\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know at whom,\u201d he added. \u201cBut it\u2019s more about (the fact) we\u2019ve got one of the oldest railway networks and signal failures happen a lot\u2026 Why wasn\u2019t that signalled to my train?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials have not said whether signalling issues played a role in the collision.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<strong>Profoundly Sad\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EMR\u2019s Managing Director Will Rogers called it \u201ca profoundly sad day for the railway community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply saddened that our driver has tragically died, and a number of other people have suffered injuries,\u201d he said, speaking at the scene alongside other officials.<\/p>\n<p>He noted the train operator was \u201cfully supporting\u201d the RAIB probe.<\/p>\n<p>Train collisions are relatively rare in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2023, several people were injured after two trains collided at Aviemore station in the Scottish Highlands.<\/p>\n<p>The crash happened on the Strathspey Railway, a heritage railway run separately from mass-transit public services, and involved a stationary carriage and another train in the station.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2020, an early morning service from Aberdeen to Glasgow came off the tracks, killing three people and injuring six near the town of Stonehaven, northeast Scotland, after a landslip caused by heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail \u2014 an arm of the UK Department for Transport \u2014 pleaded guilty in 2023 to safety failings at a court hearing and the public body was fined \u00a36.7 million ($8.4 million).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>*United Kingdom Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander says it is &#8216;too early to speculate&#8217;
