part of ongoing effort at sustaining product supply while enhancing market stability, the Nigerian Government has directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to further engage with gas producers, marketers, and other stakeholders to increase importation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas.<\/p>\n<p>Ekperikpe Ekpo, Honourable Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), gave the directive in a statement issued Monday, June 15, 2026.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ixx0417hLd\"><p><a marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Louis Ibah, Minister\u2019s Spokesman in the statement, noted Minister Ekpo said he had noted concerns expressed by Nigerians over the recent increase, and has reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains fully committed to ensuring adequate, reliable, and affordable gas supply for households, industries, and power generation across the country.<\/p>\n<p><em>ConsumerConnect<\/em> reports the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its recent Cooking Gas Price Watch for April released in Abuja, FCT, disclosed the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased from N7,655.73 recorded in March to N8,706.93 April this year.<\/p>\n<p>The NBS, in the report, said the April price represented a 13.73 percent increase, compared to what was obtained March 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minister: Marketers committed to improving LPG market situation <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Outlining measures to boost national supply, the Minister said: \u201cMarketers have committed to increasing import volumes to complement domestic production.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The statement also indicated that the commencement of LPG deliveries from the new Seplat gas facility July this year would significantly boost national supply to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Ekpo further restated that no local producer is exporting LPG volumes designated for the domestic market.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, there are extant regulatory measures that remain firmly in place to prioritise local needs of Nigerian consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister said: \u201cThe outlook for LPG supply remains positive, and the Federal Government will continue to pursue measures that enhance availability, affordability, and long\u2011term energy security for Nigerian consumers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The statement explained that the recent LPG domestic price hikes were driven largely by prevailing market realities.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Foreign Exchange (Forex) volatility, rising logistics costs, infrastructure constraints, and fluctuations in international LPG prices have all contributed to the development.<\/p>\n<p>Ekpo, however, clarified these enumerated price-influencing factors should not be misinterpreted as evidence of policy failure in the oil and gas sector of the Nigerian economy.<\/p>\n<p>He reaffirmed this commitment is reflected in ongoing interventions designed to stabilise the domestic LPG market.<\/p>\n<p>These, the Minister stated, include his directive that all LPG produced in Nigeria be prioritised for local consumption first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis policy has already strengthened domestic supply, reduced dependence on imports, and improved market resilience,\u201d Ekpo noted.<\/p>\n<p>As the NBS said in its Cooking Gas Price Watch for April, that the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased on a year-on-year basis by 10.42 percent from N7,855.60, as recorded in April 2025.<\/p>\n<p>It also said that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas increased by 13.89 percent on a month-on-month basis from N19,652.83 in March 2026 to N22,382.20 in April 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile on a year-on-year basis, the average retail price for 12.5kg cooking gas increased by 10.43 percent from N20,268.06 in April 2025,\u201d the NBS report
