{"id":695,"date":"2026-06-15T04:27:47","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T04:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=695"},"modified":"2026-06-15T07:00:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T07:00:13","slug":"safety-nafdac-alerts-consumers-to-childrens-ibuprofen-oral-suspension-over-contamination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=695","title":{"rendered":"Safety: NAFDAC alerts consumers to children&#8217;s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension over contamination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>*<strong><em>Nigeria&#8217;s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control warns consumer the US Food and Drug Administration has disclosed the presence of foreign material in medicinal products of the Children\u2019s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension may compromise product quality, safety and efficacy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Isola Moses | ConsumerConnect<\/p>\n<p>The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned consumers against children&#8217;s Ibuprofen oral suspension in the United States (US) due to potential contamination with foreign material.<\/p>\n<p>NAFDAC stated this in the agency&#8217;s &#8220;Public Alert No. 028\/2026 &#8211; Recall Of Children&#8217;s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension in the United States Due To Potential Contamination With Foreign Material&#8221; released June 8, 2026.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"cZXAax3kAB\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=744\">Band A: Electricity consumers react to NERC\u2019s special compensation directive to DisCos<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cBand A: Electricity consumers react to NERC\u2019s special compensation directive to DisCos\u201d \u2014 ConsumerConnect \" src=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=744&amp;embed=true#?secret=F2mNnIAMWe#?secret=cZXAax3kAB\" data-secret=\"cZXAax3kAB\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The health sector regulatory agency also disclosed that it received an official notification, that the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) announced the recall of approximately 90,000 bottles of Children\u2019s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension, USP (100 mg\/5 mL) due to the presence of foreign material in the product.<\/p>\n<p>It said earlier, Strides Pharma Incorporated had initiated the recall, following consumer complaints of a \u201cgel-like mass\u201d and \u201cblack particles\u201d observed in the oral suspension.<\/p>\n<p><em>ConsumerConnect<\/em> reports Ibuprofen Oral Suspension, USP (100 mg\/5 mL) is a medication for children, intended for pain relief from the common cold, flu, sore throat, headache, and toothache, and for reducing fever.<\/p>\n<p>In regard to the potential health risks, the agency observed the presence of foreign material in medicinal products might compromise product quality, safety and efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>NAFDAC also emphasised the administration of contaminated oral suspensions might potentially result in adverse reactions, particularly in children, and may present choking or gastrointestinal risks depending on the nature of the contaminant.<\/p>\n<p>Describing details of the affected products, the agency unveiled them as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Product Name: Children\u2019s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension, USP<\/li>\n<li>Strength: 100 mg\/5 mL<\/li>\n<li>Dosage Form: Oral Suspension<\/li>\n<li>Pack Size: 4 fl. oz. (120 mL) bottles<\/li>\n<li>Product Manufacturer: Strides Pharma Inc., India (manufactured the product for Taro Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc.)<\/li>\n<li>Affected Lot Numbers: 7261973A and 7261974A<\/li>\n<li>Expiry Date: 31 January, 2027<\/li>\n<li>Quantity Recalled: Approximately 90,000 bottles distributed nationwide in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NAFDAC said though the affected product was distributed and recalled within the United States, the Nigerian health sector regulator remains committed to safeguarding public health.<\/p>\n<p>The agency further noted it would continue surveillance activities to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines circulating in Nigeria and prevent the recalled products from entering the Nigerian supply chain through authorised or unauthorised channels.<\/p>\n<p>It stated: &#8220;All NAFDAC zonal directors and state coordinators have been directed to conduct surveillance and mop up the product if found in their zones and states.<\/p>\n<p>Importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the recalled products.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NAFDAC urged all medical products must be obtained from authorised\/licensed suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>The agency equally said: &#8220;The products\u2019 authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Healthcare providers and healthcare facilities should immediately inspect their inventories and quarantine any affected batches if identified.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It also advised parents and caregivers who have the affected product or may have given it to their children should stop using it immediately and seek medical advice if any unusual reactions are observed.<\/p>\n<p>According to NAFDAC, healthcare providers and caregivers are also encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of any medicinal products to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the use of the e-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC Web site www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-safety application available for download on Android and IOS stores, or via e-mail on pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng<\/p>\n<p>For complaints, you can call the Reforms Unit on the following lines:
