{"id":4515,"date":"2026-09-24T16:03:52","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T16:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=4515"},"modified":"2026-09-24T18:54:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T18:54:21","slug":"infocus-un-security-council-and-big-techs-growing-concerns-about-uncontrollable-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=4515","title":{"rendered":"InFocus: UN Security Council and Big Techs&#8217; concerns about risks of &#8216;uncontrollable AI&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>*<strong><em>Global technology executives, at the ongoing UNGA81 in New York, brief the United Nations Security Council over risks of &#8216;uncontrollable AI&#8217;, warning that rapidly advancing AI systems could soon slip beyond human control, and the need to rein in the new technology, and &#8216;save the world \u2014 or, at least, its people&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gbenga Kayode | ConsumerConnect<\/p>\n<p>The future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its associated risks to the entire humanity again, dominated the United Nations&#8217; (UN) gathering of world leaders at the ongoing 81st UN General Assembly (UNGA81) afternoon Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in New York, United States (US).<\/p>\n<p><em>ConsumerConnect<\/em> reports that following weeks of worldwide headlines about risks of what some have described as &#8220;uncontrollable AI&#8221;, and subsequent calls for a slowdown, tech industry leaders briefed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council Wednesday, in New York.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ulIXcEsYf5\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=4569\">Leo Stan Ekeh Foundation, Zinox commission AI tech centres in 2 Lagos colleges<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cLeo Stan Ekeh Foundation, Zinox commission AI tech centres in 2 Lagos colleges\u201d \u2014 Consumer Experience Is A Top Priority\" src=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=4569&amp;embed=true#?secret=1P1E3yUVAl#?secret=ulIXcEsYf5\" data-secret=\"ulIXcEsYf5\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, and Clement Delangue of Hugging Face were part of the AI firm leaders that briefed the 15-strong UN Security Council at the UN Headquarters, in New York.<\/p>\n<p>It is recalled that Hugging Face, a repository of AI models, was the target of a recent cyberattack by autonomous OpenAI software, the first in a series of incidents that have triggered rumblings over the rapidly evolving new technology.<\/p>\n<p>The AI firm leaders particularly pleaded with the United Nations Wednesday, to set controls over the burgeoning technology they are designing in order to save the world \u2014 or, at least, its people, agency reports said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tech CEOs to UN Security Council: &#8216;We could lose control of the future to AI&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the seriousness of their appeal, Dario Amodei, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Anthropic, was quoted as saying: &#8220;If managed poorly, I even believe AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, also stated: &#8220;We could lose control of the future to AI.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As part of their proposals, Altman urged extreme care as autonomous systems advance faster in cyberspace than global institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The AI firm leaders said the global community, though the UN Security Council, should set safeguards, which would be actual controls to prevent the burgeoning technology from getting too powerful to rein in.<\/p>\n<p>The global technology chief executives further urged the world to ensure that the power of AI isn&#8217;t concentrated in one company or country.<\/p>\n<p>The tech leaders further advocated international cooperation, actual safeguards, and benchmarks to measure capabilities, and prevent power concentration in single nations or companies in the global digital ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>As the debate over the need to rein in the power of AI continues, for world leaders, a key question about AI is this: Who should control life-and-death decisions \u2014 human or machine?<\/p>\n<p>It was gathered that the UN Security Council at the briefing Wednesday huddled with top technology leaders to figure out if the increasing abilities and pervasiveness of Artificial Intelligence should be controlled, and if so, by who.<\/p>\n<p>Other lingering questions are: How could it be done? When might it be just too late?<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, in his address to the world leaders Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also has warned of &#8220;killer robots&#8221;. Experts and European leaders reportedly said that was not hyperbole but something that is already a reality, or at least perilously close to mankind in the era of AI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump<\/strong><strong>\u2019s \u2018super intelligence\u2019,<\/strong><strong> dismiss<\/strong><strong>al of <\/strong><strong>alleged AI threats <\/strong><strong>to humanity <\/strong><strong>as a hoax <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In what some industry leaders have described as &#8220;global divides&#8221; sort of in respect of evolving collective safeguards against &#8220;uncontrollable AI&#8221;, the emergency meeting with AI firm executives \u2014convened by France\u2014 has highlighted sharp disagreements, report said.<\/p>\n<p><em>ConsumerConnect<\/em> reports President Trump Tuesday, in his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, in New York, announced to the world that he is changing the term &#8220;Artificial Intelligence&#8221; to &#8220;super intelligence&#8221; because it&#8217;s &#8220;more accurate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Trump simply dismissed global concerns about the advancing technology, it&#8217;s systems and effects on humanity.<\/p>\n<p>He asserted: &#8220;From this point forward, all of United States documents and hopefully the world&#8217;s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term super, as opposed to artificial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, it&#8217;s super intelligence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the United States, under President Trump\u2019s White House, has resisted a some binding global regulatory framework in favour of market forces and domestic capacity-building.<\/p>\n<p>This is considered as contrasting with the UN calls for global AI governance for collective security, according to report.<\/p>\n<p>The US President pointedly dismissed most of the concerns over AI.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the people who are warning that AI is going to &#8220;kill us&#8221;
