ConsumerConnect

As part of its public education and sensitisation initiatives, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerian consumers to the widespread distribution of the suspected counterfeit products in Nigeria.

The agency as well noted that market surveillance conducted at Ojuwoye Market, in Mushin, Lagos State.

NAFDAC revealed that the team found that the suspected counterfeit product closely resembles the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in its packaging design and overall presentation.

It further emphasised that similarity between the original and the counterfeit has made it difficult for most consumers to distinguish the suspected counterfeit product from the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in markets.

NAFDAC stated: “Counterfeit personal care products may not meet established quality and safety standards and could pose health risks to consumers.”

The origin, composition, safety, and quality of the suspected counterfeit product have not been verified, said the agency.

Meanwhile, NAFDAC has said it initiated surveillance activities to establish the availability and distribution of the suspected counterfeit toothpaste in the markets.

The health sector regulator also said all NAFDAC Zonal Directors and State Coordinators had been instructed to investigate the availability and distribution of the product in their respective areas and take appropriate regulatory action.

It, therefore, urged consumers and healthcare providers to remain vigilant and report any suspicion of the sale of suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste.

The agency said such reports could be made at the nearest NAFDAC office, by calling the designated number, or sending an e-mail to the agency’s
