in the Mozambique Hall of Residence on the University campus <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Isola Moses | ConsumerConnect&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As part collective efforts at sustaining its status as \u201cAfrica\u2019s Most Beautiful Campus&#8221;, the global alumni network of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, is increasingly playing a vital role in the provision and maintenance of the infrastructural needs of the foremost institution.<\/p>\n<p>From student accommodation to provision of water, lecture rooms to furniture, books to office equipment among others, different alumni groups have continued to offer critical intervention support to assist the University, fondly called &#8220;Great Ife&#8221; by the students and friends of the citadel of higher learning, at bridging funding gap by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"xJArecwt9V\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=3621\">IT Procurement reforms will strengthen innovation, Nigeria&#8217;s digital sovereignty &#8212; NITDA<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cIT Procurement reforms will strengthen innovation, Nigeria\u2019s digital sovereignty \u2014 NITDA\u201d \u2014 Consumer Experience Is A Top Priority\" src=\"https:\/\/consumerconnectng.com\/?p=3621&amp;embed=true#?secret=4LjlpnVHdq#?secret=xJArecwt9V\" data-secret=\"xJArecwt9V\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Demonstrating such spirit of giving back to the alma mater, the Great Ife Alumni District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia States (DMV) Branch, in the US, recently renovated Block L of the Mozambique Hall of Residence, with a view to improving the quality and living conditions of the students.<\/p>\n<p>At the official commissioning ceremony of the project held Tuesday, August 25, at Mozambique Hall on the campus in Ile-Ife, both staff and students were unanimous in saying that the intervention couldn\u2019t have come at a better time.<\/p>\n<p>The renovation of Mozambique Hall included detailed interior and exterior works with provision of fans, lightings, plumbing systems, toilet fittings,&nbsp; flooring and tiles as well as painting giving the building a comprehensive facelift.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony, which had in attendance key officials of the University Management, including the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof. Simeon Bamire; Prof. Adesola Aderounmu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic); Prof. Emmanuel Akinfala, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration); Prof. Adeolu Odedire, the Dean of Student Affairs; and other Principal Officers, alumni and residents at the event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vice-Chancellor speaks on sustaining Great Ife legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prof. Simeon Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of OAU, expressed appreciation to the alumni, and other supporters for their commitment to the development of the University.<\/p>\n<p>Bamire described their contribution as that of a valued partner in progress, which is helping to sustain the legacies of the University as a collective effort of all stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>He also stated: \u201cWe are blessed with alumni that are very passionate about our institution as they keep engaging and partnering with us in different areas needing intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vice-Chancellor further stressed the importance of a good maintenance culture of the renovated building.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the students to ensure a responsible use of the facility, and commit to the highest standards that have made the University one of the most prestigious public institutions in Nigeria over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Bamire said: \u201cNow that this place has been renovated, the only way we can make sure those who committed their resources to this initiative, is to ensure we put the appropriate mechanism in place to preserve and protect our amenities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each of the hostels, residents, must have active Block Representatives to work with the Hall Exco and Management for proper monitoring and continuous maintenance of this place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Bamire as well pointed out that the critical role played by the alumni has informed the University\u2019s decision to strategically strengthen its engagement with them as part of efforts aimed at addressing the challenges facing the foremost higher institution of learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe set up machinery through the Office of Advancement to enable us maximise our robust alumni body and today we can see the evidence as it keep yielding positive results like this,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DMV Branch President: Why alumni renovated Mozambique Hall?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his remarks on the occasion, Mr. Oluwole Akinyede, President of the Great Ife Alumni Association, DMV Branch, emphasised the significance of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Akinyede noted that except the alumni stay connected to Obafemi Awolowo University, many would not understand what is going on in the&nbsp; system.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;We believe from our time back in the days, that Mozambique Hall was the abode of &#8216;Beauty and Brains&#8217;, and it was something of pride.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, the poor state of Mozambique Hall told a different story entirely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Alumni DMV Branch also noted: \u201cIf we wish to sustain the prestige of our alma mater, we need to reconnect with it and the values.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though we did not really know much about what was going on here, we relied on insiders who sent us some pictures of the state of the hostel, and it was difficult to comprehend the level at which the facilities had degenerated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He recalled: &#8220;We couldn\u2019t come to terms with how students were living in that kind of condition; it was simply pathetic for our beloved Mozambique Queens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat immediately prompted us to action.&nbsp; &#8220;We discussed the exigency of the renovation, and set up apparatus at the branch level as well as with the Hall Management, so we swung into action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Akinyede further averred: &#8220;We believe that education is the most powerful tool for societal transformation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Therefore, for students to thrive academically, they require an environment that fosters comfort, focus, and inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As such, this project is supporting the University&#8217;s efforts to provide a conducive living and learning environment for students.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Great Ife Alumni Association, DMV Branch stated: \u201cBy investing in these residential facilities, the Great Ife Alumni Association in the DMV Branch aims to provide a home away from home, a space where the leaders of tomorrow can rest, study, and build lifelong friendships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He, therefore, expressed appreciation to the Hall Warden, Mrs Juliana Adesopo, the University Management, the Project Committee, and members of the Association for their contributions to the successful completion of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Akinyede as well urged the student residents of the Mozambique Hall to take ownership of the facility and treat it with care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you reside here, remember that you are part of a legacy of excellence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alumni intervention helps to improve living conditions of students &#8211; Warden <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the renovated project commissioning, Mrs. Juliana Adesopo, the Hall Warden at Mozambique Hall of OAU, expressed immense gratitude to the Great Ife Alumni DMV USA Branch for their positive intervention, helping to improve the living conditions of the students in the renovated block.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Adesopo recalled that the process started 2024, when she resumed work there, and met the state of the hostel in a very terrible condition.<\/p>\n<p>The Hall Warden related that she reached out to her alumni network some of whom had helped to bring succour to residents of Alumni Hall through their renovation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, she&nbsp; appealed that they extended a similar gesture to Mozambique Hall. Painting a very sorry picture of the previous state of Block L, Mrs. Adesopo recalled the experience of a fresh student allocated a room there.<\/p>\n<p>The Hall Warden noted that the girl reportedly told the father, \u201cDaddy, I prefer to write another JAMB than to stay in that room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Mrs. Adesopo the student&#8217;s father approached her and said, &#8220;Madam, please can you change her room?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Hall Warden replied, and said: &#8220;I am sorry, I cannot change her room. That tells you how bad it was.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, we are grateful to God for using our dear alumni to give us a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students laud alumni for&nbsp; initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A resident of the newly renovated Block L, Nifemi Omoniyi, (Part 1 Sociology and Anthropology), said, \u201cthough the renovation came as an impromptu notice, as it was towards the end of our first semester exams, it was a welcome development that we loved because when we first got to the hall, the place was so somehow like a refugee camp.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Adebise Adeniyi, (Part 1 Software Engineering) said, \u201cI am very glad because if you saw this place when we got here, it was very terrible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am just really grateful to the Alumni that undertook this renovation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As beneficiaries of their goodwill intervention, they are equally challenging us in the
