the Federal Government held a recent stakeholder engagement that attracted industry players and security agencies to address the recent Liquefied Petroleum Gas, also called cooking gas price hikes ConsumerConnect<\/p>\n<p>Sequel to the recent price increments and relative scarcity of the consumer product, the Nigerian Government, through the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, has held an emergency stakeholders\u2019 engagement to address Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or cooking gas reported hoarding and diversion to neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n<p><em>ConsumerConnect<\/em> reports the government&#8217;s industry stakeholder engagement had in attendance representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Nigeria marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The agency also emphasised the gathering was designed to tackle the LPG crisis as a critical energy source for millions of consumers, households, and a significant important component of the country&#8217;s energy transition agenda in the West African country.<\/p>\n<p>Energy consumers, LPG retailers and other industry stakeholders recently expressed raised concerns over relative scarcity as the price of cooking gas hit \u20a61,500\/Kg.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, few weeks ago, LPG market across Nigeria witnessed yet another price hikes, as several consumers said they purchased the product between N1,700 per kg and N2,000 per Kg in certain parts of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>NMDPRA Monday, June 22, 2026, stated that the move has become necessary in regard to recent increases in LPG prices across Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>NMDPRA said it had developed, and coordinated measures to improve product supply, affordability, and market stability in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Authority also revealed that the meeting also brought together other key government officials, regulators, producers, marketers, terminal operators, and industry associations to examine specific factors contributing to increasing LPG prices towards evolving practical interventions to strengthen the cooking gas value chain in the Nigeria market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rising LPG prices exerting pressure on household budgets: Perm Sec<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In her remarks at the meeting, Patience Oyekunle, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, described LPG as a critical energy source for households and an important component of Nigeria\u2019s energy transition agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Oyekunle acknowledged that the skyrocketing LPG prices are putting more pressure on household budgets.<\/p>\n<p>It is observed that the situation is equally raising the costs of essential products.<\/p>\n<p>The Permanent Secretary stresses the need for collective action by stakeholders to improve consumers&#8217; access to affordable cooking gas in the economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minister outlines strategies to boost cooking gas supply <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the meeting also, Ekperikpe Ekpo, Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), affirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is equally concerned about the impact of increasing LPG prices on Nigerian consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Ekpo noted President Tinubu subsequently, has directed relevant agencies to evolve practical measures to address the energy situation.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister averred that increased LPG supply must be supported by efficient logistics, improved infrastructure, and transparent pricing mechanisms to ensure energy consumers benefit from such interventions across the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Malam Rabiu Umar, Chief Executive of NMDPRA, stated that high landing costs have continued to influence LPG prices.<\/p>\n<p>Umar, however, expressed optimism that ongoing measures across the value chain would begin to ease off market pressures in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The NMDPRA Chief assured consumers that the Authority is working with cooking gas producers, and other stakeholders to raise domestic supply, strengthen market oversight, and support interventions that would enhance availability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights of some challenges <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ogbugo Ukoha, Executive Director, Distribution Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure (DSSRI) at NMDPRA, in a presentation to participants in the meeting, identified infrastructure gaps, domestic supply constraints, logistics challenges, market distortions, and global supply disruptions as major factors affecting LPG pricing.<\/p>\n<p>It regulatory agency as well reported marked improvements, following recent engagements with producers, suppliers, and terminal operators.<\/p>\n<p>Ukoha affirmed that national LPG supply sufficiency increased from 11 days to 22 days, while average daily supply increased from 4,262 metric tonnes May 2026 to 5,040 metric tonnes June 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Stakeholders across the LPG value chain severally pledged their support for government efforts.<\/p>\n<p>They also highlighted highlighting challenges affecting storage, transportation, distribution, and market efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some proffered solutions to increase LPG availability <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among other measures, stakeholders at the meeting recommended intensified market monitoring, improved enforcement against malpractice, expansion of storage and distribution infrastructure, increased domestic production, enhanced product tracking systems.<\/p>\n<p>According to them, these would ensure improved access to market data, and stronger collaboration among industry players.<\/p>\n<p>Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) again, directed all stakeholders to take immediate steps to improve supply, eliminate inefficiencies, and protect consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister emphasised that success recorded would be measured by increased LPG availability, improved distribution efficiency, and reduced price pressures
