Tinubu to swear in new IGP as Police Council approves Olatunji Disu’s appointment

The Nigeria Police Council Monday, March 2, 2026, unanimously, endorsed the appointment of Mr. Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

ConsumerConnect reports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to swear in Disu as the substantive Police Chief Wednesday, March 4.

The Presidency disclosed the ceremony would hold during the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for the same day in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, FCT.

The Nigeria Police Council’s meeting, which held in the State House, Abuja, was presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima, State Governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu were also in attendance in accordance with the Nigeria 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Others in attendance were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and the head of service, Mrs Esther Didi Walson-Jack.

It is recalled that President Tinubu appointed Disu as the new Acting IGP last week, following the resignation of the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who spoke glowingly about the Acting Inspector-General of Police, commended Disu for his exemplary services as a policeman, especially when he served as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), in Lagos State, between 2015 and 2021.

Disu’s his tenure at the time earned him and the RRS recognition for excellence in crime control in the state.

Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, also applauded the President’s appointment of Disu.

Sule said that the appointment was based on the IGP’s excellent career record.

Barr. Nyesom Wike, Honourable Minister for the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, also lauded Disu for his professionalism.

Disu as well had previously served in Wike’s home state of Rivers as Assistant Commissioner, Criminal Investigation Department, and Officer-in-charge, anti-kidnapping unit, between 2014 and 2015. He later served as Commissioner of Police (CP) in the FCT Command when Wike also became the Minister of the Federal Republic.

Wike commended the new IGP for his efficiency as a crime fighter, and for ensuring the Police Command’s strategic impact in addressing security concerns within the territory.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Monday stated that Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion on endorsing Disu’s appointment as the new IGP in Nigeria.

Olatunji Disu’s profile at a glance

Disu was born April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, and joined the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent.

He rose from the ranks with multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship-credentials that reflect his commitment to knowledge-driven, modern policing.

The Acting Inspector-General has held critical operational, investigative, and strategic command positions nationwide.

His last position was as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex, Lagos.
