Contrary to certain reports in the public space, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that the Commission has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections.

Mr. Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary (CPS)/ Media Adviser to Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of INEC, made the clarification in a statement Friday, January 2, 2026.

Oketola stated that the information on the purported publication of the upcoming General Elections timetable is false and misleading.

The Commission also stated: “INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections.”

The INEC Chairman’s media aide emphasised that the country’s electoral umpire operates strictly within the provisions of the law, especially Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

It further noted the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 empowers the Commission to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for General Elections.

Oketola restated that any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework could not emanate from INEC.

The Commission, therefore, assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections would be released in due course, in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.

The statement disclosed when such timetable and schedule are released for public consumption, the information would be communicated through the Commission’s established and verified channels.

INEC equally urged the public and the media to disregard the misleading media reports, and always rely on information from INEC’s official platforms for accurate and authoritative updates.

Amupitan’s New Year message

In Prof. Amupitan’s New Year message Friday, the INEC Chairman stressed the Commission’s resolve to conduct transparent, credible, and inclusive elections 2027.

He stated that the Commission is already taking early steps to reinforce the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

The Chairman characterised the year ahead as a time for fresh beginnings, and an important phase for strengthening institutional structures in preparation for the next General Elections.

Reviewing the Commission’s operations in 2025, Amupitan commended the Management and Staff of INEC for their commitment.

He also highlighted the successful conduct of the Anambra State Governorship Election, conducted shortly after he assumed office October 2025.

The electoral exercise, the INEC Chairman stated, showed that through discipline, unity, and professionalism, the Commission remains capable of safeguarding the integrity of the vote and strengthening public trust in the electoral process in the West African country.
