The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) have announced the launch of the Nigerian Tax Identification (ID) portal.

ConsumerConnect reports the development is part of the Nigerian Government’s ongoing efforts at modernising and streamlining tax administration in the West African country.

What is the Tax ID?

The Nigerian Revenue Service in a recent statement shared via its corporate Web site, described the Tax Identification (Tax ID) as “a unique, system-generated number assigned to all taxable persons in Nigeria for the purpose of tax administration.”

The tax regulator agency also stated: For individuals, the Tax ID is linked to their National Identification Number (NIN).

For non-individuals (businesses and organisations), it is linked to their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.

How to retrieve your tax ID

Nigerians are encouraged to visit www.taxid.jtb.gov.ng or www.taxid.nrs.gov.ng

Tax ID: Joint Revenue Board, NRS Announce Retrieval Portal Goes Live

For individuals, taxable Nigerians are directed to follow the following steps:

  1. Click on the “Individual” tab on the homepage.
  2. Select National Identification Number (NIN).
  3. Enter your 11 digit NIN
  4. Click on “Retrieve Tax ID”
  5. Enter “First Name”, “Last Name” and “Date of Birth” exactly as captured by NIMC.
  6. Click “Continue”
  7. The 13 digit Tax ID will be displayed.

For Non-Individuals (Registered Entities)

1.Click on the “Corporate” tab.

  1. Select the appropriate organisation type.

3. Enter your CAC registration number, as applicable.

  1. Click “Retrieve Tax ID”
  2. The13 digit Tax ID will be displayed

“It’s that simple! NRS stated.

In regard to basic information for taxpayers, the NRS explained the use of the new Tax ID becomes effective from January 1, 2026, replacing previously issued TINs in the tax administration ecosystem.

Stating the overarching objective of the effort, the tax regulators affirmed the Tax ID is “strictly for tax administration” in Nigeria.

Your bank accounts safe: JRB, NRS

Addressing one of the most touchy issues surrounding the implementation of the new tax reforms regime in the country, the JRB and Nigeria Revenue Service  assured Nigerians that their bank accounts are safe.

In terms of security assurance, the introduction of the Tax ID  “will not lead to bank account deductions or closures due to non-compliance,” stated the Service.
